FeO+C─→Fe+CO其热力学依据是：金属氧化物的生成自由能变化ΔG(MO)是随温度的升高而逐渐增高（负值变小），而一氧化碳的生成自由能变化ΔG(CO)却是随温度的升高而明显降低（负值变大）,所以当温度升高到ΔG(CO)-ΔG(MO)＜0时，原来在低温下不能进行的反应变得能够进行。这种方法的优点是焦炭价廉易得，缺点是必须使用鼓风炉或电熔炉，而且许多金属会生成碳化物。
