个体用适当的言语或非言语行为操纵别人对自己的印象形成过程。又称印象整饰。它是一种社交技巧，或称自我表演。在人际互动中，个体都知道对方在不断评价、判断自己，从而产生各种印象，而这些印象尤其是第一印象会影响对方对自己的反应，所以，他往往会选择恰当的言辞、表情、姿势与动作，试图给对方留下一个良好印象。印象操纵的方法主要有：①按社会标准或对方好恶打扮自己。一个人的外表最容易被别人知觉到，所以个体往往留意修饰外表，尤其在异性面前更是如此。②隐藏自我。个体真实的自我，有时不受别人欢迎，所以个体为了让人产生良好印象以及协调人际关系，常常把真实的自我隐藏起来,或戴上"面具",如行为粗鲁者假装文雅，品质低劣者假装高尚等等。③按社会角色整饰自己。即作出符合社会角色规范的行动。如当教师的在学生面前作出符合教师这个社会角色的行动，而在自己的母亲面前则是按儿子的角色行动。④投人所好。个体为了获得他人对自己的好印象，往往投其所好。具体做法如自我暴露，或者是附和、谄媚、施惠等等。
