1.我国许多戏曲剧种在唱曲和念白时使用的一种字音标准。根据元周德清《中原音韵》﹑卓从之《中州乐府音韵类编》等书所载，中州韵有阴平﹑阳平﹑上﹑去四声而无入声，字音归为十九韵类。最早使用中州韵的是元代的北曲。元明以来许多剧种都继承了这个字音传统，但又都参酌本地语音加以变化发展。目前表现在舞台上的共同特征已不甚明显，大致还共同遵守着某些读音咬字的方法，在念白中还保留着一种抑扬顿挫﹑节奏感特别鲜明的声调。一般称这种用中州韵的念白为"韵白"或"上韵"，以区别于用本地方言的念白，如"京白"﹑"苏白"等。
