中国中央级民族专业图书馆。设在北京民族文化宫内。1958年筹建，1959年 9月建成开放。原名民族文化宫图书馆，1984 年 4 月经中华人民共和国文化部同意、国家民族事务委员会批准, 改名为中国民族图书馆。截至1989年12月,藏书共51万册,其中汉文书籍 25万册;民族文字书籍24万册;外文书籍2万册。民族文字书籍中有蒙、藏、维、哈、朝、壮、傣、景颇、拉祜、傈僳、佤、布依、彝、锡伯、满、哈尼、侗、苗、塔塔尔、乌孜别克、柯尔克孜、水、黎、纳西等24种，民族文字古籍17万册，其中不少是国内外罕见的民族文字写本、刻本、金石拓片、舆图。 还有贝叶、 菩提叶写本等珍贵的特藏。(见彩图) 馆舍面积2700平方米，有阅览座位 96 个。该馆除开展阅览、邮借等服务业务外, 还增添了缩微复制机、复印机、微型计算机、电脑打字机等设备对外服务，服务范围已遍及全国30个省、市、自治区。每年接待全国各民族读者 1万人,该馆设采访编目、流通保管、文献开发、信息服务、藏文文献、缩微复制6 个部门，有汉、蒙、回、藏、维吾尔、朝、彝、壮、满、哈萨克、水、达斡尔等12个民族的工作人员45人，其中研究馆员1人、副研究馆员4人、馆员 8人、助理馆员 18人。该馆编辑出版有《中华人民共和国民族工作大事纪》、《中国少数民族图书馆概况》、《馆藏线装古籍目录》、《馆藏藏文典籍目录》等。1983年起先后与有关单位举办民族地区图书馆馆长研讨班、进修班, 采取驻馆学习、 代培和实习等多种方式培训人才;加强与民族地区图书馆的联系,建立几十个边疆服务、协作网点；开展捐书支边等活动。
