民族成员所共同信奉的宗教。常信仰和崇拜本民族的始祖或守护神。由氏族－部落宗教发展而来。早期一般带有全民族性，与本民族共存亡。随着人类社会的发展，国家政体的逐渐形成，民族宗教开始摆脱其原始宗教的性质，向古代国家宗教进化，个别甚至发展成为世界宗教。有些民族宗教的全民族性日见衰减，如婆罗门教和神道教。犹太教则至今保留着强烈的全民族性，为现代民族宗教中的罕见现象。在氏族－部落宗教的神话和传说的基础上，民族宗教初步形成了规范化的神学哲学体系，也有较完备的礼仪典制和组织规章。在文化较发达的国家并有宗教经籍流传。民族宗教常与民族的文化融合在一起。
