收益递减规律厂商在生产过程中需投入各种要素，现假定仅有一种生产要素是可变的，而其他要素保持不变，那么随着可变要素的增加，在开始时，它的边际产量有可能增加;但随着可变要素的继续增加，它的边际产量会出现递减现象。我们把这种由于可变生产要素的增加而引起的边际产量的递减甚至总产量的减少的现象称为生产要素的收益递减规律。生产要素的收益递减规律是西方经济分析中的一条重要规律，它是人们从实际经济生活中所观察到的在任何生产中都普遍存在的一种纯技术关系。必须指出:生产要素的收益递减规律是以生产技术给定不变为前提的。技术的进步可能会使收益递减规律的作用后延，但决不会使收益递减规律失效。其次，这里的生产要素收益递减规律，是以除一种要素外的其他要素固定不变为前提，来考察一种可变要素发生变化时其边际产量的变化情况。再次，生产要素收益递减规律，是在可变的生产要素使用量超过一定数量后才出现。生产要素的收益递减规律又称可变要素的边际产量递减规律，或生产要素报酬递减规律。
