(烹整孺李他霭气茹藻漏嘛·资本》一书，最先提出了“金融压制理论”，考查了发展中国家金融发展与经济增长之间的辩证关系。几乎与之同时，另一美国经济学家E·s.肖提出了“金融深化理论”，这两个理论之间在许多方面有共同点，并都充分强调金融业在经济发展中的中介作用，论证了金融体系和经济发展之间存在相互促进，相互影响的关系，金融业的发展对经济发展的至关重要性。由此奠定了后来统称为“金融中介理论”的经济学流派的基础(详见“金融压制论”和“金融深化论，，。 自麦金农和肖提出金融中介理论观点以来，经济学界对之不断进行发展、完善，使理论更具体化、数量化和动态化，并逐渐成为完整的理论体系。其中新加坡经济学家卡波、国际货币基金组织经济学家马依森和美国经济学家弗莱伊有较为突出的贡献，集中体现在他们各自建立的数学模型和研究方法(特别是动态研究)上。他们把金融中介作用放在封闭型和开放型经济中分别建立起模型进行研究。
