日本评论家。生于东京，1933年在东京府立高等学校求学时，曾被军国主义当局以违反治安维持法为名予以逮捕，并被开除学籍。从这时开始以进步观点研究日本文学史，并从事文艺理论的研究工作。1941年毕业于东京法政大学。同年，他的评论集《万叶的传统》出版。他曾任政法大学教授。日本投降前夕再次被捕。战后，同文学评论家本多秋五、平野谦等创办《近代文学》杂志。曾任新日本文学会中央委员。他主编的《日本近代文学史讲座》(1956～1957)，资料丰富，有较高的学术价值。
