研究层次上的一种非严格划分。在现代地理学看来，通常指某种具有“背景式”的、“基础性”的地域空间组合。这类地域空间的组合识别，更多地不在于自身的再现，而着重在于它所产生的“效应”和“烙印”，在于一切地理事物所附加的隐函数式的作用。正如一列奔驰于原野上的列车，其上的人虽没有直觉到地球转动对于列车和人自身的影响，但这种影响却实实在在地隐含于列车的运动之中。把具有这类性质的空间地域组合，称为宏观的，如地理地带性规律、地球运动所引起的效应等，大都是具有全球特性的地域结构。
