露卡素的基本理念是：低碳低糖，补充营养。低碳的意思是低碳水化合物（low-carbs),低糖是指低血糖生成指数（低gi)。补充营养的意思是摄入或增补最缺乏的维生素矿物质等必需营养素。
抗氧化是众所周知的概念。基本上来说就是摄入或增补抗氧化剂，以消灭自由基。而露卡素理念则提出了一个新概念——抗氧化。抗氧化总的意思是通过减少血糖波动和对胰岛素的刺激以减少细胞的糖化。糖化会导致皮肤和血管病变等。
