20世纪初至50年代,曾在开罗形成两个出版中心:宗教书籍出版中心，教科书与普通书籍出版中心。1952年之后,政府把发展出版业作为发展经济的组成部分。1958年后,私营出版社减少,出现了许多国营出版社。埃及是世界上出版阿拉伯文图书的主要国家。全国拥有 300多家出版社。出版社主要集中在开罗。主要的大型出版社是：知识出版社、新月出版社、安格鲁出版社。政府出版机构是：埃及图书总社、金字塔报出版社，它们同时兼营出版、印刷、售书、进口图书业务。埃及没有批发书刊的公司;批量售书,由上述政府出版机构代理。全国性行业组织有:埃及出版商协会、阿拉伯出版商协会。文化部协调出版业活动。政府对图书免税，对进口图书亦免税。1976年加入《伯尔尼公约》。采用国际标准书号(ISBN)，语区号为977。全国性出版物目录是：《全国图书目录》、《埃及图书在版目录》。每年1月底至2月初，由埃及图书总社主办的开罗国际图书博览会，是非洲地区规模最大的国际性图书博览会。1984年，年度出书1277种。主要从英国、美国进口书刊，向利比亚、沙特阿拉伯出口书刊。
