东瓜和尚，遗其名，姓孙，杭州人。嗜食东瓜，故名。出家华严庵。为人缄默，竟日游行街市，寒暑无间。经十余年，人莫测之。与邻庵僧慧照友。将寂之前月，告照曰，新正六日，吾行矣，汝合来送我。届期，和尚赴法慧庵斋返，见照先在。曰，汝何来。照笑曰，汝与我约，特来相送耳。和尚曰，微子言，几忘却了。遂盥沐新衣，礼佛竟，谓照曰，既行，不可无偈，为我书之。偈云，终日走街坊，心中念佛忙。世人都不识，别有一天堂。怡然而终。（染香集）评曰，时至而忘归期，前有道证，至此再见，何其生死自如乎。而究其所以致此者，无他，心佛相应故也。今人念佛之功，日仅片时，且不能一其心于安养，而亦欲冀临终之瑞应，难矣哉。
