①中国古代学官名。②今高等学校教师的学衔或职务名称之一。中国晋代武帝咸宁四年(278)于国子学设助教,帮助国子祭酒和博士教授学生。以后历代相沿，或设或废。清代末年兴办新学以后,高等学校未设助教。1927年国民党政府教育行政委员会公布《大学教员资格条例》才规定这个职称。中华人民共和国成立后沿用未变。1960年3月5日，国务院颁发的《关于高等学校教师职务名称及其确定与提升办法的暂行规定》中，规定助教的业务条件是:在高等学校本科毕业（或者具有同等学力）,学业成绩优良，一般经过一年见习期的考察（高等医科院校临床科教师应该有两年临床医生的工作经验），证明能够胜任助教工作的，确定为助教；不能胜任助教工作的，继续见习或调任其他工作。助教的工作是担任辅导课、实验实习课，批改作业，随同指导教师进行科学研究工作。欧美一些国家的大学设有助教，有的不设助教而由研究生担任助教的工作（见教授）。
