出生于湖南长沙市，幼年在长沙县木马乡大冲塘屋山村生活过几年，并在当地读小学，1953年，考入长沙市第二十中学，直读到高中毕业，1964年，毕业于北京师大中文系，担任过北师大女附中语文教员、北京市西城区教育局党委秘书、西城区文化文物局副局长，对外经济贸易大学讲师、校刊主编，现供职于首都师大中文系，为北京作家协会会员，中国作家协会会员，全国高等学校美育研究会理事、中国寓言文学研究会秘书长，长期从事文学创作及理论研究。1972年在《北京文艺》发表短篇小说《风雨白马梁》，开始步入文坛。著有小说《看青记》、《爱舔嘴唇的孩子》《黑豹》《眼睛》《奇怪的邻居》，纪实文学《我帮外孙成长》，长篇童话《红孩儿克隆六耳猕猴》、《红孩儿克隆人参果树》等等，出版的理论著作有《趣味修辞》《趣味修辞方法辨析》《写作词语巧用》《魔幻世界纵横》《世界当代艺术史》等，主编的书籍有《艺术引论》《艺术鉴赏》《简明艺术辞典》《中国古代微型小说鉴赏辞典》《第二次世界大战奇谋妙计丛书》等。
