鸥形目鸥科的1属,因与家燕的尾型相似而得名。世界共有32种，中国有8种。此属分布几遍全球,绝大多数分布于热带、亚热带。是鸥科中体型较小的类群。嘴形细长，嘴峰形直或几乎直形,不成弧状；脚短而细弱,趾间蹼不呈深凹状;尾较长,超过翅长的1/2,呈深叉状（见图）。常结群在海滨或河流活动。巢置于沼泽地的砂土窝中。每产卵2～3枚，淡灰或淡黄色。孵化期21天。
中国常见种为普通燕鸥。主要食鱼类，春秋季节嗜吃蝗虫、草地螟等，为草原和农业地区的益鸟。
