This paper argues that directives can be,as a whole,considered a continuum with "very modest attempts" and "very fierce attempts" as its two ends and as one category of speech acts in communications between native and non-native English speakers are prone to result in pragmatic failure,consequently face-threatening due to improper chosen form from the continuum.
