中国宋明理学家对《礼记·大学》的中心论点所作的概括。朱熹在他所著的《大学章句》中，把《大学》提出的"明明德"、"亲民"、"止于至善"三者称为"大学之纲领"，把"格物"、"致知"、"诚意"、"正心"、"修身"、"齐家"、"治国"、"平天下"八项称为"大学之条目"。后人称之为"三纲领八条目"，简称"三纲八目"。三纲领八条目成为后世封建政治伦理哲学的重要内容。《大学》本身对"格物"、"致知"未作解释，朱熹认为这是原文有阙佚，于是补撰《格物致知传》一章，简括地表述了他自己的客观唯心主义认识论观点，给《大学》增添了原来没有的哲学内容。此后，在理学内部的不同派别之间，以及理学家和反理学的思想家之间，围绕"格物致知"问题展开了争论，在客观上促进了理论思维的发展，丰富了中国封建社会后期的哲学史。
