属阿尔泰语系蒙古语族。主要分布在中国甘肃省宁夏回族自治州境内的东乡族自治县、积石山保安族东乡族撒拉族自治县、宁夏县以及新疆维吾尔自治区的伊宁、霍城等县，以东乡族自治县最为集中。使用人口约28万(1982)。各地口语比较一致。语音方面，有7个元音: i、媅、a、o、u、嚕、廞。有28个辅音:b、p、m、f、d、t、n、l、r、dz、堭、s、d尶、慯、嶃、d墭、堮、惼、墭、ɡ、 k、x、γ、G、q、h、j、w。复元音较多,前响二合元音有ai、媅i、ao、ou,后响二合元音有ia、i媅、ua;三合元音有iao、iou、uai、u媅i。元音和谐已基本消失。出现在音节末的辅音只有n，在以n结尾的音节里，主要元音鼻化。13世纪记录蒙古语的文献中出现在词首的辅音h(现代蒙古语已经失落)在东乡语里是x、f、h或嶃。语法方面,领格和宾格合并为领－宾格，附加成分是-ni。有使用频率不大的方面格 -r媅和方向格-γun。造格用于人称代词，含鄙视的意义。动词的语法范畴与蒙古语族的其他一些语言相比,较为简单。词汇方面，固有词里派生词占一定的比例，但是许多构词后缀现在已不活跃。有相当数量的汉语借词，还吸收了一些与宗教生活有关的阿拉伯语和波斯语借词。东乡族多兼通汉语，长期以来一直使用汉文。
