| 翟理斯（1845～1935） Giles， Herbert A. 英国汉学家。曾在伦敦查特豪斯公学读书。1867～1891年间在英国驻华领事馆任职。1897年任剑桥大学中文教授，在职30余年。毕生致力于介绍中华文明，其贡献主要在语言和文学方面。编纂中英辞典，撰写学习中文的通俗读本，改进威妥玛拼音方案，使之成为广为流传的威妥玛-翟理斯汉语罗马字拼音法。并且大量选译中国文学作品，如《中文选珍》、《红楼梦》（摘要本）、《中诗英译》、《庄子》、《聊斋志异》；所撰《中国文学史》问世较早，在中国和世界均有一定影响。此外，尚有专书介绍中国社会、历史、哲学、宗教和绘画。 |
