苏联俄罗斯苏维埃联邦社会主义共和国国立图书馆。1814年建于彼得堡，名为帝国公共图书馆。1932年以俄国作家M.E.萨尔蒂柯夫－谢德林的名字命名。1988年藏书达2900万册(件),包括180种语文,其中外文书刊523万册。该馆从1810年开始获取国内出版物呈缴本，故19世纪以来国内出版的俄文图书和定期出版物收集较全。馆藏中还有十月革命前在国内外秘密出版的革命文献；著名政治家、学者和作家，如彼得大帝、罗蒙诺索夫、门捷列夫、巴甫洛夫、果戈里、屠格涅夫、车尔尼雪夫斯基和萨尔蒂柯夫－谢德林等人的手稿。由于为广大读者服务突出，在1939年建馆125周年时,被苏联政府授予劳动红旗勋章。
该馆有26个阅览室，1388个座位。1988年登记读者3.93万人,每天接待读者4000人次。每年借阅书刊约1000万册次, 解答读者咨询 2.5万余条。1988年有工作人员1400余人,其中80％受过高等教育,受过图书馆学专业教育的约占一半。
