An analysis is made in this paper on the most current prevailing teaching method of listening and speaking /communicative English ,including situational English , audio and video aided English and functional English,which like any other teaching method has its own strong points as well as its weak points in its practical application.

From the perspective of communicative listening ability testing, the paper attempts to construct a cognitive model for language listening comprehension testing, and to apply it to HSK item setting practice.
