横向思维(lateral thinking)英国学者E.德波诺于1976年针对旧的纵向思考习惯和模式而建立的概念。认为横向思维是背离理性规则的、探索各种可能的思维，是允许失败的宽容态度。有了这种态度，游戏、好奇、想像、机遇都会有它的用武之地，表面无关的信息可以闯入，闲暇式的胡思乱想也可以发生。横向思维类似于吉尔福特的发散性思维，但两者之间最主要的区别就是前者所包含的“侧向”的含义。所谓“侧向”，除了向主导的观念或概念挑战外，它还延伸到注意力的层次，而在发散性思维的涵义中并没有这方面明确的内容。从本质上说，横向思维是感知过程与思维过程的结合。按传统的心理学理论，感知与思维是不同的心理过程，感知是思维的基础，思维是高级的心理活动。可在德波诺看来，创造性感知和创造性思维是不能截然分开的。横向思维使人们首先通过横向扩大注意力的范围，获得全新的信息，使得信息搜索的过程更富于创造性;再通过自由联想，向主导观念或概念挑战，以及进行想像，提出创造性的方案，最后进行综合性的评价。参见“纵向思维”。 (王小英撰率丈博审)
