中国数学会是受中国科学技术协会领导的全国性学术团体，中国数学会普及工作委员会是其下属机构，成立于1980年，该委员会把开展群众性数学竞赛作为它的一项主要工作，目前由它主办的全国性中小学数学竞赛包括：“全国小学数学奥林匹克”(创办于1991年)，它是一个“普及型、大众化”的活动，分为初赛(每年3月)、决赛(每年4月)和总决赛(即夏令营 每年暑期)。
“全国初中数学联赛”(创办于1984年)，采用“轮流做东”的形式由各省、市、自治区数学竞赛组织机构具体承办；每年4月举行，分为一试和二试。
“全国高中数学联赛”(创办于1981年)，承办方式与初中联赛相同，每年10月举行，分为一试和二试，在这项竞赛中取得优异成绩的全国约90名学生有资格参加中国数学会主办的“中国数学奥林匹克(cmo)即全国中学生数学冬令营”(每年元月)。
此外该委员会还配合中国数学奥林匹克委员会组织冬令营活动，选拔与培训国家集训队和代表队，为近年来我国在国际数学奥林匹克(imo)中取得优异成绩作出了贡献。
