属汉藏语系藏缅语族彝语支。 在中国主要分布于云南省的思茅、临沧地区和西双版纳傣族自治州。分拉祜纳和拉祜熙两个方言。拉祜族人口30多万，操拉祜纳方言的人口占总人口的80％以上。在国外通行于缅甸、泰国和老挝。拉祜语有 29 个声母： p、ph、b、m、f、v、t、th、d、n、l、堭、堭h、扷、s、z、掵、掵h、扵、∫、唗、k、kh、ɡ、嬜、x、γ、q、qh。其中舌叶辅音兼表舌面辅音，它们和舌尖辅音在声、韵配合关系上是互补的。有8个单元音韵母:i、e、ε、A、γ、嚕、婖、u和一个韵化辅音韵母 Y,还有10个复元音韵母,主要出现于借词中。有7个声调：5个舒声调和两个促声调（促声调的元音为紧元音）。词序和虚词为表达语法意义的主要手段。句子成分的次序是主语-宾语-谓语。数量词在名词中心语之后；动量词在动词中心语之前。人称代词分单数、双数和复数，第一人称复数又分包括式和排除式。处所指示代词分近指、远指、更远指和最远指。有些动词用变音、变调区分自动和使动。有些形容词可用变调加助词或只加助词以加深修饰程度与色彩。四音格词较丰富。外来词主要借自汉语和傣语。中国的拉祜族于1957年创制了拉丁字母的拉祜文,这种文字以拉祜纳方言为基础,以澜沧拉祜族自治县城区及其近郊的语音为标准音，共有26个字母。
