大经堂是塔尔寺宗教组织的最高权力机构,藏式平顶建筑,面积1981平方米,面宽13间,进深11间。初建于明万历三十四年(1606年),后经几次扩建。最后扩建为168根柱子的大经堂。
大经堂内矗立的108根大柱子,缀以各色刺绣飘带。经堂内悬挂用各种绸缎剪堆、堆绣的多种佛像、佛教故事图与宗教生活图,并悬挂各种壁画(卷轴画)。经堂内设蒲团上千个,可供2000多喇嘛集体诵经之用。数以百计的经卷存放在四壁的经架上;上千尊小巧精致的铜质馏金佛像置于四壁的神龛中。
大经堂前面的欠拉院,系二层藏式建筑。大经堂下设四大扎仓(学院):参尼扎仓(显宗学院),成立于明万历四十年(1612年),是成立最早、规模最大的研究显宗教义的学经部门;居巴扎仓(密宗学院),成立于清顺治六年(1649年),是研究密宗教义的部门;丁科扎仓(时轮学院),成立于清嘉庆二十二年(1817年),是研究天文、历算、占卜的学经部门;曼巴扎仓(医学院),成立于清康熙五十年(1711年),是研究医药治病的部门。大经堂是参尼扎仓的经堂,也是4个扎仓全体喇嘛聚会念经的大礼堂。
