爱尔维修自从出版《论精神》一书遭受迫害，违心地写下放弃自已意见的声明书后，思想上并未消沉，开始酝酿写作《论人的理智能力和教育》，继续宣扬他的功利主义伦理学说。为了免于再次受到迫害，他只好把出版的希望寄托于死后。这部书在他去世前 3年即1769年就已基本上写好，内容和《论精神》基本相同，只是在对他原有的理论观点的论证和阐明方面更加丰富有力。正如他在该书序言中所讲的："如果说我并不放弃我在《论精神》那部书里建立的那些原则，那是因为在我看来它们是唯一合理的原则......这些原则在本书中运用得比《论精神》那部书中更加广泛，更加深入......"。在这部书中，爱尔维修对宗教和封建制度进行了更加剧烈的抨击，甚至许多地方论证了人民推翻专制制度的权利。从这一点看，这部书的启迪作用，超过了《论精神》。
