印尼苏拉威西岛特产椰子蟹以其肉质鲜嫩而闻名于世。然而，由于人类对其疯狂的猎捕以及自然栖息环境被破坏，椰子蟹在其栖息地越来越难觅其踪迹。
椰子蟹年幼时经常成为其他动物比如巨蜥、野猪和大鸟等的袭击目标。然而，对椰子蟹真正的威胁则来自于人类，来自于人类的滥捕滥杀。据调查，现在椰子蟹在雅加达餐馆的售价每公斤达到10万～20万盾（约合11.7～23.5美元），在苏拉威西等椰子蟹原产地其售价也达到了很高的水平。高额利润驱使人们对椰子蟹趋之若鹜。
苏里斯蒂奥诺说，印尼椰子蟹现在仅存于印尼东部一些无人居住的小岛上，而在有人居住的岛屿上这种螃蟹已经基本绝迹。虽然对其具体数量尚无法准确统计，但可以肯定，椰子蟹的数量已极其稀少。苏里斯蒂奥诺希望政府加大对椰子蟹的研究并进行人工繁殖以保护这种濒危动物。
