This paper points out that the culture in Nantong is a kind of border culture and the character of the culture in Nantong is that it is influenced by both cultures in Huai and Wu areas,as the result,it has the characters of self-independence,stressing education and virtue and being opt for the golden mean and self-control.

中国林学家。曾用名吴季次
浙江省诸暨县人,1913年农历 7月28日生。1940年毕业于金陵大学农学院林学系。1946年赴美留学，先后获耶鲁大学林学硕士和杜克大学林学博士学位。1950年回国，曾任中央林业部总工程师,中国林业科学研究院研究员、副所长、副院长,中国林学会副理事长、理事长,中国科学院学部委员1977年曾获芬兰林学会奖状及奖章，1980年当选美国林业工作者学会名誉会员。他在从事林业工作的50年中，倡建和推动了中国森林生态、森林地理、树木引种驯化等学科的发展。对中国主要林区的森林植被、树种分布和造林进行了广泛的野外调查和研究；对松树、杉木等重要用材树种的生态习性、松树的分类和地理分布，杉木品种及其地理分布和立地区划作了系统研究。他强调从实际出发，因地制宜地组织安排林业生产建设，写出了中国最早的林业区划草案。在树木引种驯化方面，他认为一个树种的分布区不广，不等于该种只能适应生长在此范围;一个地区树种少,不等于只有这些树种适应生长于此地区，因此推行引种驯化可比育种节省时间、人力及物力。撰有《中国国外树种引种》，主编《国外树种引种概论》、《中国杉木》。他还是《中国大百科全书·农业》卷分编委副主任。蒋有绪
