河南省林业县,信阳地区辖县。位于省境东南部,邻湖北省。面积1612平方公里,人口30.40万。县府驻新集镇。县境为鄂、豫、皖革命根据地的心腹，县城新集原属麻城光山县，土地革命时期边区苏维埃设此。1932年由光山、麻城、黄安(今红安)3县析置,称经扶县。1947年改今名。县境位于大别山腹地，海拔一般100～500米。东南部山峰黄毛尖1011米。山间有谷地、盆地。小潢河、泼陂河、晏家河、白露河等都源出县境南部，北流入淮。年均温15.1℃，年降水量1274毫米。农业生产以林为主，山林约占总面积70％。盛产马尾松、黄山松、杉木、毛竹、桂竹等。土特产有茶叶、板栗、黑木耳等。茶叶产量在全省占重要地位。药材有桔梗、茯苓、柴胡、贝母。野生动物有豹、狼、野猪等。革命纪念遗址有中共中央鄂豫皖分局、鄂豫皖军委航空局、白沙关万人暴动旧址等50余处。
