解放战争后期，中国人民解放军第四野战军主力部队于1949年 4月由平津地区向中南进军时，豫北的安阳、新乡两城尚被国民党军盘踞。安阳有冀豫边区"清剿指挥部"所辖之多股地主武装共1.4万余人;新乡守军第40军近2万人，已于3月被解放军华北军区第70军包围。第四野战军为扫清途中障碍，以第13兵团司令员程子华率第42、第47军和华北军区部队一部共13万余人，发起安新战役，决心先围歼安阳守军,再相机攻打新乡。4月16日,第42军由河北省磁县向南奔袭，次日晨包围安阳,至27日肃清外围据点。5月6日拂晓，该军在第47军和太行第5军分区各一部的配合下向安阳城发起总攻,仅两个小时即全歼守军。第47军主力于5月1日逼近新乡，协同第70军开展政治攻势，守军于5日签字投诚，6日出城接受改编。此役，共歼灭和改编国民党军3万余人。
