| 霍尔（1811～1898） Hall，James 美国地质学家，古生物学家。曾任全美科学发展协会主席、国际地质大会第一、二、三届主席、北美地质学会主席等。1863年当选为国家科学院特别院士。霍尔经过对美国纽约州地质的长期考察和对所收集的化石标本的潜心研究，于1847～1894年期间，先后出版了13卷本的《纽约州的古生物学》，并创建了一个当时最杰出的无脊椎动物化石收集室。他的这项研究成果，成了当时美国地质勘察的范本，并为生物地层学的研究工作奠定了基础。1857年霍尔首次提出在大陆边缘地壳下坳，开始是接受沉积，继而转化为造山带的观点。在霍尔这一观点的基础上，发展形成了J.D.丹纳的地槽学说。著有《北美大陆的地质历史》、《纽约地质（第四部分）》等。
