（杂语）江西湖南之义，为昔时禅风极盛之处。由此而泛指禅徒曰江湖。传灯录石头章曰：“江西主大寂，湖南主石头，往来幢幢并凑二大士之门。”然象器笺五曰：“忠曰：江湖二水名也（文选注），今言江湖者，江外湖边本是隐沦士所处。如莲社高贤传周续之曰：心驰魏阙者，以江湖为桎梏。骆宾王序曰：廊庙与江湖齐致。范希文严先生祠堂记曰：既而动星象，归江湖是也。故禅士散处名山大刹之外，江上湖边，此为江湖人。或不出世为名山大刹住持者。聚会在一处亦为江湖众也。然相传以江西马祖湖南石头往来幢幢为解。此说浸染学家肺肠，欲浣灌之难矣。”案江湖二字，庄子大宗师曰：“泉涸鱼相与处于陆，相呴以湿，相濡以沫，不如相忘于江湖。”佛家本此。
