泸沽湖又称左所海。保护区在金沙江虎跳峡段的东北部。湖泊面积约8127公顷，海拔2685米，平均水深40米。高原湖泊自然景观为主要保护对象。湖畔居住着有"女儿王国"之称的纳西族人，仍维持着氏族社会以母系为中心的"阿注"式婚姻关系。保留有登山祭祀的"女神"游湖寻求伴侣的习俗。
