1964年在罗马成立，总部设在主席所在地（现设布拉格），正式工作语言为英语。学会的宗旨是：支持和发展运动心理学方面的研究；普及运动心理学，反对政治、宗教和种族歧视。凡从事运动心理学的个人、全国性协会和国际性团体组织均可成为学会会员。
国际运动心理学学会由全体代表大会和理事会管理。代表大会每 4年召开1次，参加者均有1票表决权。理事会由主席、副主席、秘书长、杂志编辑、司库和理事组成，总人数为 9～15人,由代表大会选举产生,任期两年，可连选连任两届。理事会每年至少召开 1次会议。学会举办运动心理学方面的讨论会和讲习会，出版机关刊物《国际运动心理学学会杂志》。
