属阿非罗-亚细亚语系闪语族。公元2世纪后中东地区基督教使用的一种语言，是罗马帝国东部仅次于希腊语的重要语言，也是把希腊文明传播到阿拉伯地区的重要媒介。伊斯兰教兴起后,才让位于阿拉伯语。8世纪以前，古叙利亚语用于礼拜仪式。现在，古叙利亚语仍是中东若干教派的礼拜仪式语言。古叙利亚语有丰富的文献,包括《圣经》译本(见图)、哲学著作、语法、医药和科学著作。有22个辅音字母，原来没有表示元音的字母，但8世纪初设计了3种表示元音的不同书写系统。文字由阿拉米文字草写体衍生而来，自右至左，也可自上而下书写。
