蛇骨塔位于阳平村佛图寺前，高30.7米，为十三级密檐式空心方形砖塔。其建筑年代，式样及技巧大致与崇圣千寻塔一致。
相传南诏时，在阳平村附近有一条巨蟒，经常吞食人畜、糟踏庄稼，害得附近百姓无法生活。段赤诚决心为民除害，他全身扛满利刃，手持两把利剑，来到蟒蛇洞前，大蟒张开血盆大口，将他一口吞入腹内，他趁机在蟒腹内滚动挑刺，经过一番生死搏斗，巨蟒被刺死，段赤诚也死于蟒腹。白族人民为了纪念这位为民除害的英雄，在他牺牲的地方，用蛇骨烧成灰，修建了这座灵塔，并在旁边修建了一座段赤诚的衣冠墓。墓碑上刻着“唐义士段赤诚之墓”。至今，蛇骨塔仍屹立于苍洱之间。
