冯兖,北齐冀州人。以儒生初贡入台,闻惠光法师演化邺城,私自惟曰:“元素两教颇曾究怀,至于释宗生未信重,试往候光以择所从。”既至,值光开诸倾听,久之疑滞顿释,顿足稽首愿毕命归依,遂为弟子,究心法要常自检责,有叩击者应病予药,多至感泣。其言曰:“诸行者不得信此无明昏心,觅长觅短,须识诈贼,觅他过恶。不求其长,则吾我渐歇,常须看心,自已多过。虽在世间,无有滋味,此心将我,上至非想,还下地狱,常诱诳我,如怨家,如爱奴,岂可长养贼心,使觅名利,造疽蠢也。故经云:‘常为心师,不师于心。’八岁能诵,百岁不行,不救急也。”时有传写其言者,世号捧心论焉,兖在光门,低头敛气,日营饭粥,奉僧既了,躬自涤器,夜宿灶前,取蒿一束,半以藉背,半以坐之,明相才动,粥便巳熟,午后担食,送彼狱囚,往还所经,识者开路,或至稠人广众,率先供给,若水若火,若扫若帚,随所应用,莫不备焉。作务少暇,口随说法,初不告倦,遂卒光门。(续高僧传)
