二十世纪五十年代《帕洛马天图》问世后,兹威基等人根据星系的形态特征,认为有些星系处在引力不稳定状态,其中有的星系对、星系串或星系链彼此并非隔绝,而是在引力作用下互相干扰,破坏了星系的正常形态,甚至出现针状的、纤维状的或扫帚状的星系际桥状结构。他把这种星系对和多重星系称为互扰星系。沃龙佐夫-韦利亚米诺夫编有互扰星系图和表,载有1,800个互扰星系。
