低分子量的醇、酚、醚类及其他烷氧基化合物用浓`HI`(57,比重1.69)加热处理,生成碘化烷:`R-O-R 2HI\to2R-I H_2O`,`R-O-R' 2HI\toR-I R'-I H_2O`,`R-O-Ar HI\toR-I ArOH`。齐塞尔应用上述反应以测定烷氧基。将含甲氧基、乙氧基化合物用浓`HI`处理,生成的`CH_3I`、`C_2H_5I`用`AgNO_3-C_2H_5OH`饱和溶液吸收,有`AgI`沉淀生成。从得到的`AgI`重量,可计算出甲氧基、乙氧基的百分含量。`CH_3O-=13.21\times(AgI(G))/(YG)`;`C_2H_5O-=19.17\times(AgI(G))/(YG)`(`AgI(G)`表示`AgI`重量,`YG`表示样品重量)。例如,将4.24毫克的罂粟碱用浓`HI`分解,生成11.62毫克`AgI`。推测每分子生物碱中含甲氧基数:`339.38/4.24\times11.62/(AgI)=(339.38\times11.62)/(4.24\times234.80)=4`。
