尚义县地处内蒙古高原南缘，位于河北省西北部，西、北与山西省天镇县和内蒙古兴和、商都县毗邻，东、南与本市张北、万全、怀安县接壤。距张家口市116公里，北京市306公里,是河北省“环京津经济战略圈”的重要实施区域，是三省五县交界处的重要交通枢纽，是连接内地与西北部的重要通道。
尚义县最早建县在1936年，1937年尚义、兴和、万全成立联合县，1958年并入张北县，1960年张北与商都分县后又划归张北县。1961年恢复尚义县建制至今。
尚义县全县辖6个镇8个乡、172个行政村，622个自然村。全县总人口20万人，其中农业人口17万。
尚义县总面积2632.5平方公里。地形南北狭长，北高南低，分为两个地貌单元，坝上高原和坝下山区。坝上地区平坦无际，草肥水美；坝下地区沟壑纵横，群峰叠翠。平均海拔1300米，年均气温3.5℃，无霜期100天左右，年均降水量413毫米。属东亚大陆性季风气候中温带。有大小河流100余条。
尚义县投资环境良好，基础设施完善。交通便利。境内16条柏油路经纬交错、四通八达。13个乡镇实现了通油路。省道张尚线二级公路改建工程极大改善了交通条件，距北京行程不足3小时。国家级京呼银兰光缆穿境而过，移动通讯覆盖全县，村村实现通电话，ADSL宽带业务开通。电力资源充裕。农网和城网改造工程全面实施，全县供电能力高达44100千瓦。水资源充足，可满足工农业生产需要。农村劳动力充裕，有近3万农民技工在外务工。
