常绿乔木，有树脂；枝轮生；叶鳞形、锥形或阔卵形，螺旋状互生；球花单性异株，稀同株；雄球花大而球果状，有雄蕊多数和多室的花药；雌球花椭圆形或近球形，单生枝顶，有多数螺旋状着生的苞鳞及珠鳞组成，二者基部合生，先端离生，珠鳞舌状，每珠鳞上有1胚珠，珠鳞与胚珠合生；球果成熟时苞鳞木质化并脱落；种子无翅或有与苞鳞结合而生的翅；子叶2，稀4枚。
