| 南方古猿 Australopithecus 已知人类进化系统的最早代表。又称作南猿。1925年根据在南非塔翁发现的化石定名。生活在距今约400万～100万年前的南非和东非。大体上可分为纤细型和粗壮型两个类型，其中的纤细型后来进化成更进步的人类，但关于南方古猿的祖先，尚不清楚。南方古猿生活于开阔林地和草原环境，不仅生活在热带，而且扩大到温带地区。发现的骨骼化石表明，南方古猿已采用两足直立的行走方式，身体各方面具备了一系列人的特征。其脑量440～520毫升，至少比同等身体大小的现代大猿的脑量大30％；脑的结构也与猿不同，基本上属于人的类型。南方古猿同现代人一样有比较长的成熟期，表明已有比猿、猴远为复杂的行为，需要有较长的学习时期。 |
