| 李约瑟（1900～1995） Needham，Joseph 英国科技史学家，生物化学家。1900年12月9日生于英国伦敦，1995年3月24日卒于剑桥。原名约瑟夫·尼达姆。因尊崇中国古代哲学家老子（传姓李），遂以李为姓，起中国名字李约瑟。1937年 ，他从3位中国学者那里了解到中国曾对世界科技发展作出过重大贡献，从此对中国科技史产生浓厚兴趣，开始学习中文。1939年，他完成第一篇中国科技史论文。1942年任英国驻华使馆科技参赞，此后专事中国科技史研究。1948年返回英国剑桥大学，着手撰写《中国科学技术史》。1954年第一卷问世。该书计划出7卷34册，已基本出齐。李约瑟是英中了解协会会长，英国唯一一位既是英国皇家学会会员、又是英国科学院院士的科学家，中国科学院首批外籍院士之一。他对科技史研究及中西文化交流有较大贡献。
