具有短周期的X射线脉冲的天体,脉冲周期极短而且稳定。明显的例子是武仙座 X-1(脉冲周期掦=1.24秒)和半人马座X-3。现已证认出,这一类X射线源是密近双星。它们各由两个子星组成,一个是中子星,另一个是光学子星。光学子星通过洛希瓣(见临界等位面)外流和星风等形式不断向外抛射物质。中子星吸积由光学子星发出的物质。中子星的引力场很强,吸积到中子星的物质可以获得很大的动能,在中子星表面转化为 X射线辐射──热轫致辐射。X射线辐射的短周期脉冲结构就是由中子星的自转引起的。目前已观测到的这类 X射线脉冲星周期最短的是0.7秒,最长的可达835秒,比射电脉冲星的周期要长。绝大多数 X射线脉冲星有明显的射电辐射。观测得知,绝大多数射电脉冲星不发射X射线,只有蟹状星云脉冲星发出很强的 X射线脉冲辐射,因此它也是X射线脉冲星。但蟹状星云脉冲星与上述的X射线脉冲星不同,它不属于双星X射线源,而且它的X射线辐射机制是非热性质的。
