独乐寺在河北蓟县县城内，相传始建于唐，后经辽统和二年（公元984年）重建，现存辽代建筑尚有山门及观音阁二处。
山门面阔三间（16.63米），进深两间四椽（8.76米），单檐四阿顶，举高约1/4。建在石砌台基上。平面有中柱一列。
此门屋檐伸出深远，斗拱雄大，台基较矮，形成庄严稳固的气氛，在比例和造型上是成功的。
观音阁位于山门以北，亦建于统和二年，面阔五间（20.23米），进深四间八椽（10.52米）。外观二层，有腰檐平座，内部三层（中间有一夹层）。屋顶用九脊殿式样。
台基为石建，低矮且前附月台。平面上减去当心间缝中柱，形成了六边形的井口，以容纳高16米的辽塑十一面观音像。
柱子仅端部有卷杀，并有侧脚。上下层柱的交接用了叉柱造，由于上层和夹层的檐柱较底层檐柱收进约半个柱径，在外观上形成稳定感。位于底层斗拱以上和平座楼板以下的夹层，在柱间施以斜撑，加强了结构的刚度，这种做法和山西应县佛宫寺释迦塔同出一辙，它经受了近千年来多次地震的考验，证明结构是合理的。
