由于台湾两个种的蝌蚪体腹面有吸盘 ,既不同于林蛙属Rana ,也不同于趾沟蛙属Pseudorana和水蛙属Hylarana ,而类似于湍蛙属Amolops的蝌蚪 ,但与后者的成体和蝌蚪又明显不同。

蛙科的1属，湍蛙体形大多与湍流生活相适应；体扁平,后肢细长；趾蹼发达，绝大多数为全蹼，指、趾末端膨大成吸盘状，背面有一横凹痕,腹面呈肉垫状,借以贴附在溪流石上。中国现有15种，分布于秦岭以南、西藏南部、华东南地区和海南岛。山区种类较多，华南湍蛙分布区广。成蛙夜出活动，一般生活于山溪水边或岸边，有的蹲在瀑布下的石头上。4～9月为繁殖季节,这时比较集中,大雨后或近黄昏时颇易采到；曾在一条不长的溪流中一晚采到200余只,大多数都正在抱对。湍蛙可能只在产卵季节才能大量发现；俟后就很难找到。卵产于瀑布下的石隙间或贴在附着物上。卵径约4毫米,乳白色。蝌蚪吻部低圆，眼位于头背上方，体宽扁，尾肌强，尾鳍低。与蛙属不同湍蛙蝌蚪腹面口后有1马蹄形大吸盘,用以吸附在溪流石上，不致被水冲走，常逆流缓缓向前移动。
