蟾科的1属。肩带弧胸型；椎骨11枚,较其余无尾类多1枚,椎体双凹型,有残留的脊索；有3对短肋；有残留尾肌。现有3种,仅分布于新西兰。体型较小，成蟾体长20～50毫米。常栖息在近水源的苔藓上、潮湿的土洞内或岩石下。卵色白,产于潮湿的陆地上,如倒木或石下以及泥洞底部。雌蟾卵巢内终年都有大小不同的卵,左右卵巢的卵是分别产出的,每1卵群含卵2～8粒,卵径4～5毫米。成蟾有护卵习性，常徘徊于卵群附近。卵不是同时孵出，同一卵群孵出时间先后可差9天,一般需6周。直接发育，孵出时已接近完成变态。一般将滑
蟾与分布于北美西北部高寒山区的尾蟾(仅 1种)归列为同一科。也有人主张将后者另立为尾蟾科。尾蟾生活于急流冷溪及其附近，有肉质短尾，用以作交接器；卵产于水内，不是直接发育；蝌蚪属于有原始性状的有角齿腹孔型，在冷溪内越冬。在演化过程中，滑蟾──尾蟾类群被认为是最原始的。因为在阿根廷上侏罗纪发现的较完整的侏罗南蛙椎骨也是11枚，再者从椎体双凹型，蝌蚪的类型,间断孑遗分布型等性状,推断也可知这类动物是现生无尾类中最原始的。滑蟾只产于新西兰，是孑遗动物，已被列为保护动物。叶昌媛
