| 杜鹃花科 Ericaceae 双子叶植物纲五桠果亚纲较大的一科。木本植物，大多常绿，少数落叶 ，陆生或附生 。叶互生或轮生 ，不具托叶。花两性 ，辐射对称或略微两侧对称 ， 单生或通常组成总状、圆锥状或伞形花序；花萼通常 5 裂，宿存；花冠通常鲜艳合瓣（稀离瓣），5裂或4～6～8裂；雄蕊为花冠裂片数的 2倍，稀同数或更多，内向顶孔开裂，稀纵长缝裂，子房上位或下位，4～5室，稀6～20室。蒴果、浆果或核果 。本科所含属、种数各分类学家划分的差异甚大，有划分为50属1350种；也有划分为125属 3500种。广布于南、北半球的温带，也位于热带山区，少数环北极或北极分布，极少分布在非洲和大洋洲。中国有 17属 650 种左右，分布于全国各地，但以云南、四川、西藏最为丰富。中国无特有属，但多特有种。该科植物多生于山地森林，兼有陆生和附生，相当多的种类分布树线以上，形成高山植被，少数种类在低海拔地区，有些生于近海地方或附生于红树林。该科中有不少是著名的观赏植物，如杜鹃属、树萝卜属、吊钟花属等；许多种杜鹃的木材材质致密，可作工艺用材；杜鹃属、白珠树属有些种类可提取挥发油、黄酮类化合物，用于医药工业和香料工业。
