船底座 南天星座之一。位于飞马座与苍蝇座之间，船尾座和船帆座之间，大部分在银河之间。船底座有两个引人注目的菱形：一个在船座座与船帆座交界处，由这两座星座中各两颗亮星共同组成，人称“假南十字”；另一个是在“假南十字”东南方的“南船钻石”。“南船钻石”4颗星虽不很亮，但在4000年后它将担任船底座中第一任南天极的角色。“假南十字”与南十字座很相像，只是南十字座的一横向左倾，“假南十字”的一横向右斜。“假南十字”总是先升起来，往往使人误认为是南十字座。到6000多年后，它将担任船底座中第二任南天极的角色。在船底座中有1颗全天第二亮星老人星。以天狼星为中点，向北偏西可看到猎户座的参宿四，向南偏西差不多同样距离，闵可以看到发白色光芒的老人星了。在大约12000年后，当北天极指向织女星时，南天极就将指向老人星。
传说希腊英雄伊阿宋率领众勇士乘从“阿尔戈”号大船去觅取金羊毛，经过许多磨难，最后终于取得这一无价之宝的金羊毛，凯旋而归。后来，女神雅典娜把这艘海船提到天上成为南船座。但由于南船座范围太大，1750年法国天文学家拉卡伊翅这分成3个星座，船底座就是其中最南边的一部分星空。
