湖南桂阳人。中共党员。1988年毕业于北京大学中文系。历任湖南省《湘江文学》杂志编辑、编辑部副主任，湖南省永兴县副县长，湖南省作家协会专业作家、党组成员、组联部主任，湖南文艺出版社社长，《芙蓉》杂志主编，广东花城出版社社长，《花城》杂志主编，副编审。湖南省作家协会第三届理事、第四届副主席，湖南省文联第四届委员，广东省作家协会第四届理事。1972年开始发表作品。1985年加入中国作家协会。
